Samsung Galaxy S5: Tips for Using S Health App

               Samsung's latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S5, comes with a built-in heart-rate monitor and a personal wellness app, called S Health, to help users keep track of their fitness. 
The S Health app has several sections to help you track various aspects of wellness, ranging from diet to physical activity. It also connects to Samsung wearable devices such as the Gear Fit. Here are some tips on how to get the most out of the S health app.

Heart-rate monitor

               The Galaxy S5's built-in heart-rate monitor is a small sensor on the back of the phone, located just below the camera. To use the heart-rate monitor, open the S Health app, and select Heart Rate from the main screen. You are then prompted to put your fingertip against the heart-rate monitor on the back of the phone. It shouldn't take longer than 10 to 15 seconds for the phone to display your heart rate. If it's taking longer, it might mean you haven't placed your fingertip correctly, or that you're moving too much. Resting your hand on a table might minimize your movement and help the device measure your heart rate.
                   You can then access your heart-rate data — including your daily and monthly heart-rate averages — by tapping the graph logo on the lower-right corner of the screen. You can also see a list view of all your recorded heart rates by tapping the chart logo at the top of the screen.

Nutrition tracker

                The Food section of the S Health app includes a comprehensive library of food items, along with their caloric and nutritional information. You can search and select the foods you ate each day for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, and add them to your daily log.
To log your food more quickly, you can tap on the star logo next to the items you eat regularly so that they are added to the favorites list. This will save you time in searching for the information for that same coffee you drink every morning, for example.
                   When you select a food item in the library to log it, the information on calories per serving is displayed. But you can also view more comprehensive nutrition information after you add an item to your meal. To do this, select View Nutrition Info, and then tap on the arrow on the upper right.
              If you forgot to record your food for the previous days, you can't access those days by scrolling the dates back and forth. However, if you tap on the date on the screen, it opens a calendar, from which you can choose an earlier date and then enter your meals for that day.

Exercise
         
            The Exercise section of the S Health app includes sections for running, walking, cycling and hiking. Your progress and distance are superimposed onto maps.
To change the map view while you work out, tap on the location pin at the top of the screen — this lets you toggle between map view, satellite images and terrain maps using the square logo on the right side of the screen.
To review your workout after you are finished, tap on the chart logo at the top of the screen. You can then select which workout session you'd like to review. From there, you can access details about the workout, such as duration, distance, speed and calories burned, and go to the map to see the route you took.

Pedometer

            The pedometer counts your steps throughout the day. In the S Health app, you have to activate the pedometer in order for the phone to start tracking your steps. If you are using a Samsung wearable device, such as the Gear Fit, you can sync the device with the app, so that the S Health app will show step counts taken by the Gear Fit rather than your phone. New Tricks PS Games

Old console, new tricks: Getting the most out of your PS

                     Already paid up for Sony's PlayStation 4? Or are you waiting on a certain blockbuster title before you make the move to the next gen? We don't blame you. However, the PS4's ancestor -- that slightly curved obelisk sitting under your TV, the one with half an inch of dust -- still has a few tricks in it. While we wait for Sony to perfect its streaming tech, there's still no way to play PS3 titles on Console No. 4, unless it gets a fancy facelift... and you buy it again. So, we turn back to our faithful PlayStation 3. Born in 2006, eight years is a pretty good term for a games console. But maybe you don't want your time with it to be over. We don't either, and have found a few ways to breathe new life into your gradually graying PS3.

Get a PlayStation Plus subscription

             Really, this should be in past tense: Because you should have gotten in on this surprisingly high-value service a year ago. PlayStation Plus is really that good. For under 10 bucks a month (down to $5 per month if you sign up for a year), you're offered an "instant game collection" that's updated every 30 days or so, and that one fee gives you access on every compatible console (PS3, Vita and PS4). As of this writing, the library includes BioShock Infinite, Payday 2, Uncharted 3, Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and eight more PS3 titles. Free games rotate in and out each month, but if you "buy" it to download (even if you didn't download right then), you can play it for as long as your sub lasts -- not just when it's part of the selection. Past titles (depending on region) have included Super Street Fighter IV, Infamous 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed III, to name a few. Yeah, more titles than you'd probably ever have time to play, but the service typically delivers something we actually want to play nearly every month. Since launch, a total of 138 PS3 games and a host of PS1 games have been available on the service.
                       Protip: The "instant game collection" on PS Plus differs from region to region. There are more mainstream titles coming to US and European subscribers, but the Japanese one (you'll need to pick up some yen-based PlayStation Network credit to buy your sub), has a ridiculous archive of original PlayStation (and, er, PC Engine) games. Are most of them in Japanese? Yes. Did we get a handful of free PS3 games (Shadow of the Colossus HD) games in the process? Oh yes.

Upgrade the PS3's hard drive

                Rather than delete your downloads to make space for new ones, why not expand? Go from 20GB to 300GB. For your shopping list, you'll need a 2.5-inch internal SATA drive. Many tinkerers suggest one that spins at 5,400 RPM to match the PS3's original drive and to keep the new one from running too hot. It's not plug-in-and-play simple -- you can't just pull out the smaller HDD, insert a new one into the PS3 Slim and play away. After backing up your current setup with the console's backup utility, you'll need to remove a few screws and gingerly switch out the drives. The only tricky part is remembering to put a system update file on a USB stick alongside your backup data. Thankfully, SCE has provisioned all the instructions needed here, for all three hardware iterations. Make sure you know what you're doing here, too. Proceed at your own risk, although despite our apprehension, our own installation went without a hitch.

Use the (much better) PS4 controller with your PS3

            Sony's newest DualShock is just so much better. It's more comfortable, looks better and even comes with a smartphone-baiting touch panel and share button, although those last two features aren't going to work here. The rest of the controller, surprisingly, does work. There are some caveats: There's no PS button, so it's really only for use during a game, and it won't connect to the PS3 wirelessly -- you'll have to keep it tethered while you play. Handily, Reddit users have also compiled a list of games that will (and won't) work with a PS4 DualShock, and for the fantasists among you, you can pretend that you're playing on a PS4.
Protip: Did you know that if you put a PS4 game disc into the PS3... nothing really happens? Did you even read the intro? C'mon.

Try PS3 Remote Play on the PS Vita (but don't depend on it)

               Yeah, the PS3 did it first. Unfortunately, it didn't work all that well. On the PS4, Remote Play is fully functional, but on its predecessor, the feature is limited. That said, the HD remasters of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and the God of War Collection are all worth playing through on a handheld. Should you do so, we advise staying well within range of the nearest WiFi router -- in our experience, Remote Play on PS3 is temperamental, particularly when you lack a robust wireless signal.

               With the release of the official 2048 game for Android just recently, it’s easy to say that this game is the next big hit for the Play Store.  However, if you’re like me, you might be having some issues with this simple math game and aren’t quite able to get into the high scores. Thankfully, here are some tips and tricks to help you try and “beat” this addictive game.

         Starting with the basics: the object of the game is to sum even numbers together until you get to the magical number of 2048. Don’t underestimate it though, despite the ridiculously simple concept, the game is anything but. You’ve got a 4x4 board and each time to you swipe to move the block around and add together identical numbers, another is added to the mix. The game ends when the board gets filled up and you cannot make any more moves.

Helpful Advice

                  In general, you should avoid just randomly swiping and adding numbers together, but should try to mix together as many combos as you can. Since one number is added each time you swipe in a direction, by adding together two sets of numbers at once, you free up an extra space on your board.
                 Try to limit your movements to three directions and pick a corner in particular where you can place your highest number.
Reflect well on each move, not only will you move the numbers that you want, but also the numbers that you don’t want.
Make sure to arrange it so that your highest numbers are close together. Having two 128 boxes on the opposite side of the board will get you nowhere.

Strategy

                   Like all mathematical games, there is always an effective strategy for getting to 2048 and effectively winning the game. The trick is to place the highest number is the lower corner (always the same one) and working your way from there. Gradually, your numbers will start to grow from around your corner block and you’ll start seeing a descending order start to appear. Take care not to move the highest number to the opposite side of the board as another number could occupy this coveted spot. Unfortunately, by using this method, you can to think before each move and contemplate what each swipe will do to your board.

“Beetle “ method

                 If you’re less concerned with actually winning the game by strategy, but just want to beat your friends score, there is another trick that is much more simple and easier to do. Just keep swiping down once and to the right once, repeating these two movements until you can’t move your blocks in those directions anymore. Once you get to this point, swipe once to the left and then repeat the down and right process.  After a while (it may take a few tries), you’ll find yourself with 2048.

3) In Zen mode, slow down during the last 5-10 seconds of play.

                  The last bit of the stage is when you typically start to get the most agitated and the adrenaline begins to take over. If you make one single mistake, the whole round will be lost, so slow down and play it a bit safer at the very end to ensure that you finish it.

5) In Classic mode, go as fast as you absolutely can.

                 The goal here is to get the fastest time possible, so don’t worry about slowing down. You have exactly fifty tiles to tap on before you finish the stage, so don’t bother slowing down here. In fact, playing this mode is a great way to practice for making a super high score on the Zen mode.

5) Tap to a rhythm on the Classic and Zen stages, too.

                This will prevent jerky taps, which often result in double-tapping by accident. Tap smoothly and keep your concentration, and get a song in your head if necessary. Focus on one step at a time so that you don’t lose concentration.

1. Encourage your child always to use child-friendly search engines, such as Swiggle, Ajkids or Kids-search. Safe search settings can also be activated on Google and Bing. Don’t forget to opt for the safety mode on YouTube, iTunes and Google Play.
2. Parental controls should be installed on every device your child uses: mobile phone, tablet and games consoles (both home and handheld).
3. Cyberbullies are looking for a reaction, so make sure your child knows that by deciding not to reply they are making an active choice not to give power to the bully.
4. Use the built-in tools on social networks and mobile services to block anyone who is cyberbullying your child.
5. Remind your children that even though people they’ve met online might feel like friends, they may not be who they say they are.
6. Make a habit of checking the information that’s online about your child. Keep an eye on the social network pages and other sites your child uses.
7. If you see inaccurate information about your child, ask the person who posted it to correct or delete it. If they won’t, ask the site administrator to do so.
8. When your child stops using a social networking profile or website, it’s a good idea to deactivate or delete their account.
9. Look in the browser history at the search terms your child has been using and the sites they’ve visited. Keep an eye on the apps they’ve downloaded on their phones too.
